Born in Tamworth, New South Wales, in 1931, John Stanton was raised in a family where horses, hard work and the Australian bush were simply a way of life. His father, Jack Stanton, was an Australian Champion Buckjump Rider, and from an early age John was surrounded by some of the country's finest horsemen, drovers and stockmen.
Throughout his life, John was fortunate to learn from remarkable men including his grandfather Clarrie Stanton, his father Jack, Frank Scanlon, Bill Stanton and Mick Flanagan. Their knowledge, resilience and respect for the land shaped the man he became and the life he would go on to lead.
This book is far more than a personal memoir. It is a collection of stories, lessons and memories from a disappearing era of rural Australia—an honest account of life on the land, the people who lived it, and the values that defined them. Through the different stages of his life, John reflects on the experiences that taught him, challenged him and ultimately made him who he is.
